AES-128

Conditionally Safe

Encryption algorithm

This algorithm is safe with sufficient key/output size. Grover's algorithm halves the effective security level.

Key Lengths (bits)

128

FIPS Standard

FIPS 197

Known Vulnerabilities

  • Grover's algorithm (reduces effective security to ~64-bit)

Migration Recommendation

Recommended post-quantum replacement:

Migrate to AES-256

Notes

Grover's algorithm halves the effective key length to ~64 bits, which is borderline. NIST recommends migrating to AES-256 for quantum resilience. Still acceptable for short-lived data.
